Now underway, the extensive redevelopment project reflects Translink's commitment to its Downpatrick customers and employees, bringing the service into line with the world-class standards being rolled out across the company's bus and rail network.

A temporary bus station has been erected and will operate throughout the construction period - which is due to complete by summer 2005 - to ensure that services are not disrupted.

"Greater convenience and comfort for customers and staff will be the hallmarks of the new centre," said Gary Mawhinney, Translink's District Manager for the area, "enabling us to build on the excellent service levels we currently offer here in Downpatrick.

"Passengers will particularly welcome the new covered departure stands, heated waiting area, electronic screens carrying up-to-the-minute journey information, dedicated parent and baby room, and CCTV to improve their security.  Full provision will be made for disabled customers, with the introduction of special features such as low-level ticket desks and an induction loop for the hard of hearing, while custom-built staff facilities, including new shower area, canteen, and recreation room, will enhance working conditions for our workforce.

"It is appropriate at this time to thank all our customers and staff for their ongoing support," he continued, "and we look forward to welcoming a new era in Downpatrick's public transport history with them."

The project is part funded by the European Union Peace and Reconciliation programme.
