Bright Ideas from Whitehead
3 August 2004
It’s not just the weather that’s looking brighter, so is Whitehead Railway Station thanks to the ‘green fingers’ of Brighter Whitehead Community Group who have been tending flowers and plants at the station for four years, and this year is no exception.
Frank Moore, Translink’s Manager for the area explains; “The relationship we have with ‘Brighter Whitehead’ is fantastic, essentially we have a discussion about planting, provide the flowers and Brighter Whitehead do the rest. It’s wonderful that local people take such a pride in their community, it really means a lot to us and our passengers too, arriving at a station with a wonderful floral display can make all the difference. We are encouraging more local groups to ‘adopt’ a station or railway halt; to find out more groups and individuals should contact their local rail stations.”
Mr Bobby Stocker, Chairperson of Brighter Whitehead Community Group commented; “It’s about giving something back to the community and enhancing the environment for everyone to enjoy, after all we live here too! Next year sees the 10th Anniversary of Brighter Whitehead and over the years we have been involved in projects all over the town. However the railway station has a special place in Whiteheads history and so brightening up the facility with Translink is a particularly enjoyable event, especially as local people use it on a daily basis and also for many visitors its their first impression of the town and we want it to be a positive one!”
