Smart Money on Smartlink

18 March 2004

Translink have announced today that fares on Citybus, NI Railways and Ulsterbus will be revised, effective from Monday 29 March 2004.

Citybus (now Metro) passengers using the cashless Smartlink products are set to benefit from significant savings. Top up multi-journey cards will now offer a saving of 25% making a single fare of 90p. Passengers can also buy Smartlink Travelcards for unlimited weekly (£13) or monthly (£49) travel and the One Day Travel Card fare has been held for a further year at £3.20, which entitles passengers to one day’s unlimited travel on the Citybus (now Metro) network.

Translink’s Marketing Executive, Ciaran Rogan explained, “Our Smartlink tickets are proving popular with both our passengers and staff; they are easy to use, good value for money and reduce boarding times. We are proposing to extend our ‘smart’ products to NI Railways and Ulsterbus passengers later this year.”

“We have made every effort to minimise the rise in fares and we are pleased to confirm that many fares including the Enterprise cross border rail service will remain unchanged.

Other fares held include:

“On average all other fares will increase by 5%. We are committed to the continued improvement of public transport in Northern Ireland and will ensure that revenues generated will continue to be re-invested in improving the service.  Our passengers have highlighted that frequency and convenience are of paramount importance in service delivery.  These aspects have been addressed with the new improvements to the Goldline Network which are due to be implemented on the 19th April.  Also, rising costs generally mean that fare increases are inevitable and are necessary to continue improvements in service delivery”.

Mr Rogan added, “In order that our passengers obtain maximum value for money, we urge them to use Smartlink and multi-journey type tickets including weekly, 10 journey, monthly and 40 journey tickets and take advantage of the significant savings these offer”.

He concluded; “We would like to sincerely thank our passengers for their continued support for public transport.   The recently released monitoring results highlighted that our passengers were already beginning to see the benefit of recent investment in new stations, passenger facilities and the many new modern buses added to the fleet.  We are now looking forward to the imminent arrival of the new trains and will continue to focus on addressing our passenger’s needs to ensure they receive a high quality modern public transport system.”
