New Buses on the Double

1 September 2003

Fifteen state of the art double deck buses joined the Citybus (now Metro) fleet today with a further 10 to arrive in service by the end of the month as part of Translink’s massive £22.6million investment in 190 new buses.

Loaded with features like digital CCTV, the locally manufactured buses represent a major step in the continual development of a modern and safe public transport system, which boasts superior levels of passenger comfort, quality and driver safety.

“We are delighted to see the timely arrival of these new buses,” explained Jim Aiken Translink’s Acting Chief Executive.

“Quality buses are essential to the future of public transport and the introduction of these new modern buses demonstrates our on-going commitment towards delivering a quality service for everyone.

“Complying with the latest Disability Discrimination Act, the buses offer greatly improved access to passengers with disabilities including wheelchair users, the elderly and also parents with babies and young children.”
Mr Aiken explained that the latest buses are packed with innovative features like safety windows, fully protected driver cabs, and low maintenance LED lighting.  The buses are also kinder to the environment, meeting stringent Euro 3 emission standards.

He concluded. “The digital CCTV system now even features a forward facing camera which has the potential to record unauthorised use of dedicated bus lanes, and capture images of stone throwing incidents which is a great safety feature.”
