Statement from NI Railways on the Kerr Report on the Downhill Derailment

16 July 2003

Acknowledging the release of the Kerr Report on the Derailment at Downhill on 4th June 2002, Jim Aiken, Chief Executive of Translink, said “I welcome the release of this detailed and thorough Report; N I Railways gave every assistance to the Inspector, Gerald Kerr, during its preparation and finalisation of this detailed and thorough Report.  The Report clearly identifies that the incident at Downhill on June 4th 2002 was the result of many separate factors combining during a very short period of time.  Recommendations are made in respect of several duty holders and involved parties.  N I Railways accepts responsibility for implementing in full all recommendations which relate to rail operations; indeed many are already significantly progressed.

I have communicated this unequivocal commitment to the Minister for Regional Development and undertake to report regularly on progress to his officials”.
