Translink’s Central Station has just become one of Belfast’s most convenient places to access the internet, thanks to a project between Translink and BT. The state-of-art station is one of the first venues in Belfast to launch BT Openzone and BT Broadband Internet Kiosks together.
‘On-the-move’ passengers can now log onto the web wirelessly through their own laptops which use the station’s new ‘BT Openzone’ technology or by means of one of the BT BroadBand Internet kiosks located inside the station.
Translink’s Central Area Manager Billy Gilpin commented; “The benefits to our passengers are two-fold. Business travellers waiting on a train are able to securely access office networks via the Internet and send and receive e-mails on their laptops. While tourists arriving at Central Station can use an Internet kiosk to discover local information, maps, tourist information, restaurants, accommodation and of course access the latest travel information on our website www.translink.co.uk.”
He continued; “We were delighted to work with BT in enhancing the travel experience for our passengers and hope to eventually roll out this technology throughout the network.”
Stephen Curlett BT’s Business Development Manager (BTNI Payphones) explained; “The joint project with Translink is part of a wider initiative which looks at making the internet as accessible to the public as possible at selected venues or ‘hotspots’. We have sought to do this through BT Internet Kiosks and BT Openzone sites, both operate at Broadband speed which is up to 10 times faster than a dial-up modem.”
He concluded; “We are delighted that Translink have come on board. The newly refurbished Central Station is the perfect venue to trial the latest technology and we hope to pilot further venues with them later in the year.”
Try the latest technology for yourself at Central Railway and Europa Bus Stations. For more information on BT Openzone and BT Internet Kiosks check out www.bt.com/openzone and www.bt.com/payphones.
