Translink Fares Revision – Get ‘Smart’ and Save

20 March 2003

FARES DETAILED BELOW ARE NOW INVALID - PLEASE REFER TO 2004 PRESS RELEASE PAGE

Translink today announced that fares on Citybus, NI Railways and Ulsterbus would be revised, effective from Monday 31st March 2003. The Citybus (now Metro) single journey fare which is by far the most popular ticket type across Translink will remain unchanged at £1.10. Also the top-up ‘Smartlink’ multi-journey cards will continue to offer a saving of 22% making a single fare of 85p.

Translink’s Head of Marketing, Ciaran Rogan explained, “We will be extending our range of ‘Smart’ products with the launch of new weekly (£12) and monthly (£45) ‘Smartlink Travel Cards’ which provide unlimited travel across the Citybus (now Metro) Network. Also a new ‘All Day’ ticket will replace the single fare on the Centrelink 100 Service so passengers can hop on and off as many times as they like in one day.

“On average other fares will increase by 5%.  Enterprise fares for cross border travel will however remain unchanged”.

He continued, “We have made every effort to minimise the rise in fares, however rising costs generally mean that fare increases are inevitable.  In particular, we must take into account the uncertainties surrounding fuel costs.  Also, vandalism continues to be a problem and although we are making every effort to combat this anti-social behaviour these incidents still occur at significant cost to the company – regrettably other passengers have to foot the bill.”

Mr Rogan added, “In order that our passengers obtain maximum value for money, we urge them to use Smartlink and multi-journey type tickets including weekly, 10 journey, monthly and 40 journey tickets and take advantage of the significant savings these offer”.

He concluded; “We would like to sincerely thank our passengers for their continued support for public transport.  We remain committed to the continued renaissance of public transport in NI and will ensure that revenues generated will continue to be invested in improving the service.   It’s tremendous to see that the enhancements have already begun to benefit our passengers and we will continue to focus on addressing their needs to ensure they receive a high quality modern public transport system.”
