Presentation of Plaques to Ulster in Bloom Winners 2002!

20 February 2003

At a ceremony where plaques were presented to the winner’s of last year’s competition, Translink Chairman, Dr Joan Smyth CBE said that the event was an important manifestation of Translink’s commitment to the community.

“It is a pleasure to see so many people dedicated to the task of making Ulster a more pleasant place to visit. Many of the faces I see in front of me are very familiar, but it is always encouraging to see new organisations and categories being introduced to the competition.

“Those involved in the task of making Northern Ireland more attractive to visitors are tireless in their work, and we are pleased to be able to recognise their efforts in this manner.

“The success of the competition is based on that fact that Councils and In Bloom Committees continue to enter year after year. But we sincerely hope that the 25th Ulster In Bloom will attract additional entries from new towns, businesses and organisations. As we enter the 25th year of the competition, we are sure that committees across Northern Ireland will be preparing exciting new arrangements and planting designs that match the vibrancy of the competition. A special category to commemorate 25 years of Ulster in Bloom will also be announced at the launch of the competition later this year.”

Speaking at the presentation of awards for the 2002 Translink Ulster in Bloom Competition, Alan Clarke, Chief Executive of NITB congratulated everyone who participated in the competition saying,
“Through their hard work and horticultural efforts they have created towns and villages which are a delight to visit.   The results leave visitors with colourful memories of their holidays here and a more positive image of Northern Ireland as a whole.

“Since NITB first organised the Ulster in Bloom competition in 1979 Northern Ireland has been transformed by the wonderful floral displays of councils and local people, and, with Translink’s support over recent years, the competition has gone from strength to strength providing us with a backdrop of which we can all be proud.”
