More than 100,000 of Northern Ireland’s SWELs (Seniors With an Energetic Lifestyle) will be at the cutting edge of transport technology from May 1st, as a new smart technology comes into use across the province’s public transport network.
As part of the new £6.3million ticketing project, the Senior Smartpass – an all-new electronic travel card entitling the over 65s to free public travel – is leading the way in a technological revolution which will redefine the way public transport is managed.
The new Senior Smartpass was launched today by Minister Peter Robinson and Translink’s Chairman, Dr Joan Smyth at an event attended by Senior Translink representatives, their advisors MVA Ltd, and system creators, Wayfarer Transit Systems; ESP Systex, provider of the technology enabling the smartcard system, and representatives from Help the Aged and Age Concern.
Translink’s Managing Director, Mr Ted Hesketh said that the new system was the beginning of a programme which would facilitate great improvements across the public transport network:
“The new Senior Smartpass is the first phase of a programme that will see Translink’s ticketing systems take advantage of the excellent technologies which have been developed in recent years. These ‘Smartlink’ cards as they will be known will be introduced later this year on Citybus (now Metro) services. They will be rechargeable with holders enjoying discounted fares. In due course, passengers will be able to enjoy personalised stored value /stored ride cards on all Translink services.
“This system will not only be more convenient for the holder due to faster boarding times and improved accuracy, but it will enable Translink to ensure that resources are allocated to maximum effect on appropriate routes. The smart cards will also play a part in reducing fraudulent use of pre-paid or concession fares.”
Although 220,000 Senior Smartpass applications have already been sent out to those aged 65 or over, anyone celebrating their 65th birthday in coming months will also receive an application form from the Social Security Agency. These forms should be checked for their accuracy and returned to local bus or rail station along with proof of eligibility and a passport sized photograph. Anyone who does not receive an application form can obtain one from their local bus or rail station.
