New ticketing system for Citybus
Early October sees the launch of a new £6m ticketing system which will be used on every Citybus (now Metro) vehicle in the fleet. Belfast’s First Citizen Lord Mayor Jim Rodgers was one of the first passengers to use the new system.
Ciaran Rogan, Translink’s Head of Marketing explained, "Pilot testing of the new system is currently being carried out on the Quality Bus Corridor on the Saintfield Road, prior to the Belfast wide introduction on 1st October. The results so far have been very positive. This exciting new project will replace existing ticket machines with state of the art equipment which will greatly improve our service to the public. In particular, the new machines will facilitate the use of smart cards for free travel for over 65s. These will then be extended to other passengers and offer easier ways to buy multi-journey and season tickets and gain discounts across the network. Passengers are encouraged to inform the driver of their destination stop which will be printed on their ticket. An additional feature of the new machinery is the use of ‘Global Positioning System’ which updates the ticket machine with the vehicle location. This information is printed on each ticket issued"
A programme to extend this ticketing system to NI Railways and Ulsterbus will be completed by Spring next year.
Mr Rogan concluded, "Should passengers have any queries about the new system they can contact Translink’s Call Centre on 028 90 66 66 30 or click www.translink.co.uk.
