Free travel for senior citizens

Translink have welcomed the introduction of free travel for Northern Ireland’s senior citizens which will be introduced from 1 October 2001.

Ted Hesketh, Managing Director with Translink explained, "We wholeheartedly support this move towards providing free transport for senior citizens. We have worked closely with the Department for Regional Development to fully implement the new policy".

He continued, "Anyone over 65 years of age is eligible to obtain their free pass, however existing concessionary pass holders need not re-apply. To avail of free travel anywhere in Northern Ireland on any Translink bus or rail service, senior citizens should call into their local bus or rail station to collect their free concessionary pass. They should bring 2 passport-sized photographs, proof of age, such as a medical card, passport or driving licence and proof of residency in Northern Ireland. We would encourage anyone eligible to obtain their pass before 1 October as they will not be entitled to travel free from that date, unless they have one".

He continued, "Evidence of such schemes operated elsewhere has proved that a policy of free transport for senior citizens is very successful, for both passengers and the public transport company. As not only does it effectively target those passengers with a genuine social need but makes a real difference to their quality

of life. It also boosts quieter services during the day, as travel by senior citizens tends to be off peak".
