Smart use of the Senior Smartpass

10 September 2002

Translink wish to remind Smartpass holders how to use their new pass.
Smartpasses for Senior Citizens aged 65 and over and War Disabled were introduced in May this year.  Over 140,000 passes have now been issued for the free travel scheme which is funded by the Department for Regional Development.

Ciaran Rogan, Translink’s Head of Marketing, explained, “It is important that all passengers remember to present their smartpass each time they travel, in order to receive the concession. Our drivers are instructed that every journey must be recorded, in accordance with Translink policy and DRD regulations.  The full appropriate fare will be charged if a Smartpass is not presented.”

He continued, “We are delighted at the success of the Smartpass scheme, with over two million free passenger journeys already made, and we look forward to continuing to provide friendly, fast and free travel to all Northern Ireland’s senior citizens and war disabled.”

On boarding a bus, the passenger should place their Smartpass on the reader on the ticket machine.  When travelling by train, passengers must show their Smartpass to the ticket inspector or conductor on board.

If passengers have any questions regarding their Smartpass, or if their card is faulty,  lost or stolen, they should contact Translink on 028 9066 6630.
