Flowerbeds, window boxes and hanging baskets lay untouched today, (10th March), as horticultural representatives from winning towns, villages and organisations across Northern Ireland gathered at the official plaque presentation of the 2004 Translink Ulster in Bloom competition, at the Stormont Hotel in Belfast.
Congratulating the winners Translink Chairman, Dr Joan Smyth, said, “Today marks the culmination of the most successful Ulster in Bloom competition, since the first seeds were sewn 26 years ago.
“Our panel of ten judges battled the elements travelling the length and breadth of Northern Ireland to objectively assess a stunning array of floral displays. Indeed, with 145 entries, the 2004 competition was our most successful to date.
“As Ulster in Bloom continues to flourish, Translink is delighted to be associated with the competition. Translink remains committed to Northern Ireland’s communities and to our environment and our ongoing support of Ulster in Bloom is a demonstration of that commitment.”
Translink Chief Executive, Keith Moffatt added his congratulations, commenting,
“Open to all sections and, with the Schools Art Competition, all ages of the Northern Ireland community, Ulster in Bloom encourages civic pride, and makes our villages, towns, cities and bus / rail stations brighter, more colourful and welcoming to local residents and tourists alike.
“Everyone involved in Ulster in Bloom can be proud of their contribution to colour and vitality across Northern Ireland.
“As ever, Translink remains committed to improving our services and our support of Ulster in Bloom goes hand in hand with securing new trains, buses and facilities which make public transport more accessible and attractive to customers. We were certainly very pleased with how our new ‘unmanned rail halt’ category was received and will certainly develop this element of Ulster in Bloom in the 2005 competition” Mr Moffatt said.
Speaking on behalf of the Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB), Chairman, Tom McGrath OBE, commented:
“The Ulster In Bloom awards presented today have been achieved through the sterling efforts of so many people in towns and villages across Northern Ireland. I congratulate all the winning entries, and look forward to seeing the fruits of their labours in the 2005 competition.”
