Carrickfergus Station Shortlisted in Heritage Awards

28 October 2002

Carrickfergus station has been named as a finalist in this year’s prestigious National Railway Heritage Awards.

Translink’s £750,000 renovation of the Grade 2 listed station last year restored the station’s 19th century architecture to it’s original glory, as well as incorporating the very latest in 21st century facilities.

Translink was particularly commended by judges for ‘an extremely successful refurbishment…the station gives a very welcoming impression, providing the facilities of a modern transport interchange as well as retaining its links with the past.’  Station staff were also singled out for praise for their enthusiasm and pride in the station.

Translink Controller in Carrickfergus, Frank Moore, commented, “We are absolutely delighted to be finalists in the National Railway Heritage Awards.  The Awards reflect everything we have tried to achieve in the renovation of Carrick Station – retaining its classic features while offering passengers the very latest in customer service.”

He continued, “The station now offers a range of facilities, including electronic passenger monitors, Park & Ride, and access for passengers with disabilities.  However, Translink remain committed to further improving the station.  Stage Two of the refurbishment is about to commence, which will improve the subway.  A new subway canopy will be installed, as well as lifts and a new stairway, drainage system and CCTV.  This represents a further investment of £850,000 in Carrick Station and is due to be completed in Spring 2003.”

The National Railway Heritage Awards were first established in 1979, and aim to encourage high standards of sympathetic restoration, modernisation and maintenance of historic railway buildings.  The Awards will be presented by The Princess Royal in London on Tuesday 3 December 2002.
