LEVEL CROSSING SAFETY

Translink is committed to delivering high quality sustainable public transport that is vital for the economic, social, and environmental wellbeing of Northern Ireland.

We help to keep people connected to employment, education, retail, social and leisure opportunities, as well as provide opportunities for visitors.

Safety is our top priority and we want to maintain our high safety standards for our customers, staff and the wider public.

Public Road Level Crossings

The Most Important Stop of the Day

  • You MUST always obey the flashing red stop lights.
  • You MUST stop behind the white line across the road.
  • Keep going if you have already crossed the white line when the amber light comes on.
  • Do not reverse onto or over a level crossing.
  • You MUST wait if a train goes by and the red lights continue to flash. This means another train will be passing soon.
  • Only cross when the red lights go out, and the barriers are fully raised.
  • Never zigzag around half-barriers; they lower automatically because a train is approaching.
  • Read our Most Important Stop of the Day booklet here.

Public Road Level Crossing Abuse

Ignoring the warning signals and walking across in front of oncoming trains could have deadly consequences. Rail trespassing can result in a fine and a criminal record.

Level Crossing Safety Video

At Translink, safety is our top priority. In this video, we will focus on level crossing safety.

Rail Safety 2019 Video

Translink NI Railways has released footage of unsafe behaviour at level crossings, including near misses, which put members of the public at risk of serious injury.

Safety is our top priority and we want to maintain our high safety standards for our customers, staff and the wider public.

People who use railway crossings are reminded to be vigilant at all times, pay attention to warning lights and notices and never try to ‘beat the barrier’.

International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD)

The International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) is a worldwide initiative to improve awareness of level crossing safety. The campaign has been spearheaded by the International Union of Railways (UIC) with the support of the railway community around the world. Translink participates in this annual event.  Check out the link below for more details on ILCAD.

User Worked Crossings

A user-worked crossing is one where the user opens and shuts the gates.

Every year many people are killed or injured in accidents at level crossings, simply because they fail to follow simple safety rules.
