Dear Colleagues,
You may be aware of coverage in the media today of a Fair Employment
Tribunal case Duffy v. Ulsterbus. This was a very complicated
and difficult case which related to events up to 10 years
ago. We are disappointed to have lost this case but note
that the
decision was not unanimous and we are considering a basis
for an appeal.
However, the case is a timely reminder of the fair employment
responsibilities of each of us and our policies in respect
of harassment and dignity at work. We carry out extensive
training
in these areas and their importance should not be forgotten.
On several separate issues:
I would like to praise all staff who have worked hard to
keep rail services running in the Lurgan area over the past
week
and to repair the damage caused to our facilities there.
Once again
it is our passengers who are inconvenienced by the civil
unrest, violence and vandalism and our own people have shown
real commitment
and professionalism in working through this and doing the
right thing for our passengers – thanks to you all.
This week too our new Minister was named as Conor Murphy
MP MLA of Sinn Fein, representing Newry and Armagh. We have
previously
met with him on several issues and I look forward to working
closely with him and the new Assembly to continue developing
our public transport network – this is a real opportunity
for us.
Finally – to those who are enjoying a few days off, possibly
with your family – enjoy the break!
Philip O'Neill
Acting Chief Executive
