The Launch of Foyle Metro and Wellbeing Month

Monday 04 September 2017
On Friday, it was great to be part of the launch of our new Foyle Metro service. It is a major development for the City’s public transport network. Operating across 14 bus corridors on a simplified route network, the service features an eye-catching new-look red bus fleet and attractive bus timetable designed to meet the future transport needs of the city. We have already had some great feedback on these improvements and the striking new look of the fleet.

"good public transport is important to the mobility and global competitiveness of our towns and cities"

Foyle Metro offers a range of enhanced connections to work places, schools, hospitals and all that the city has to offer. It also improves integration with Goldline Express and NI Railways services. This is the second major development to services in the North West, following the new hourly rail service in July, and is something we can all be proud of.

I was also very pleased to accept an invitation, on behalf of everyone at Translink, to the Lord Mayor of Belfast’s installation dinner at the week-end. The new Mayor’s theme is ‘Global Belfast’, focusing on how Belfast can compete globally and I was reminded of how important good public transport is to the mobility and global competitiveness of our towns and cities.

September marks the beginning of Translink’s Wellbeing Month and new Wellbeing Strategy supporting Public Health Agency’s 5 Steps to Wellbeing- Get Active, Connect, Give, Keep Learning and Take Notice. You will see posters and leaflets in staff areas and articles on ULINK throughout the month highlighting various events, with hints and tips for how to look after your wellbeing.

Tying in with this tomorrow we are launching our new campaign with charity partner, Action Mental Health, “Your Journey to Good Mental Health”. The new campaign highlights the various health benefits of using public transport such as; more time to relax, read and socialise. To date we have raised over £3,200 towards the work of Action Mental Health, mostly through staff fundraisers- such as the Ballymena football match between Ulsterbus and NIR, staff participating in a zipline, running the Belfast Marathon Relay and the Staff Charity 5k run.

As we move into Autumn can I take this moment to thank all staff who have been involved in the wide range of additional activities this Summer such as the Irish Open, Belfast Vital, Féile An Phobail, Newcastle’s Festival of Flight, the Women’s Rugby World Cup, UEFA Women’s Under-19 Championship, various other sporting events, a very busy cruise ship season and the Portrush Airwaves Festival at the weekend. The whole team have pulled out all the stops, from those involved in the planning and scheduling for events, to drivers, conductors, inspectors, and other staff who have stepped up to cover extra shifts. This summer has been another great example of the Translink SPIRIT.
