Winter Timetables and Driver Recruitment

Tuesday 12 September 2017
Our winter timetables have come into effect this week and children have returned to school, this is always a busy time on the roads. Thanks to everyone who has made the transition smooth for our passengers and to ensure our new timetables came into effect seamlessly. The ‘Safety Bus’ team are also back visiting schools and demonstrating the importance of safety on public transport.

"our new timetables came into effect seamlessly"

We are currently recruiting drivers for both Metro buses and BRT, ahead of its launch in September 2018. We will also be hiring BRT Customer and Revenue Protection Officers and support functions such as BRT ticketing. BRT is a due to be operational by September 2018 and will transform public transport in Belfast. This is an important new service for us, I know we are all very proud to be operating it for Belfast and there’s a lot of Innovation and Teamwork going on to ensure a successful launch next year

Plans for the Belfast Transport Hub are also progressing and 3,000 newsletters have been delivered to homes and businesses in areas adjacent to the proposed development. The newsletter sets out the importance of The Belfast Transport Hub/Weavers Cross project, not just for Translink, but for businesses, communities and the NI economy as a whole. The newsletter is available on ULink and on The Belfast Hub section of the Translink website www.translink.co.uk/thehub/

Infrastructure improvement projects are continuing across the company, for example the platforms at Bangor station are being upgraded to cater for increased passenger demand. The works programme which starts today, is due to be completed by the end of October and will improve safety for passengers and staff, remove congestion on the platforms and improve the appearance of all three platforms and the station as a whole. Works will take place on a phased basis to ensure minimal disruption to train services, which will continue to operate as timetabled for the duration.

This week I was able engage with key stakeholders at a NI Civil Service event, attended by many senior civil servants from Health, Education and the Economy. This was a great opportunity to discuss how infrastructure plays such an important role in supporting health, education and economic outcomes, as outlined in the draft Programme for Government.

You may have noticed that the #Smartmovers ad is back on our TV screens. It will be shown on ITV and Channel 4 for the next 7 weeks, promoting Translink as ‘Your First Choice for Travel’ in Northern Ireland.

Finally, a big thank-you to Gerard Madden, one of our Metro drivers who received very positive feedback for helping passengers requesting help, directions and advice, in the true Translink SPIRIT.
