Gliding into Christmas

Monday 18 December 2017
There’s been a fantastic response to our new Glider vehicle which went on display last week in Custom House Square in Belfast!

"thank you for playing your part in our successful year"

I know many of you took advantage of the opportunity to step on board the first of the 18m long Glider vehicles ahead of their introduction into passenger service in September 2018. Everyone I spoke to was extremely impressed by the new look and passenger features and you can check out reaction on our Glider You Tube video.

Representing an investment of over £90m, these Eco Hybrid vehicles can carry over 100 customers and boast a host of modern features like Wi-Fi and USB charging facilities. They use the latest diesel-electric hybrid engine technology for a smoother take off from halts, lower noise, reduced vibration and lower emissions.

High profile media coverage will also help raise public awareness as we prepare to deliver the next stages of this major project in 2018. Over the next eight months, infrastructure enhancements will be completed and each new vehicle will undergo intensive testing and commissioning before entering passenger service. A training programme for both operational and engineering staff will be rolled out and a series of roadshows will showcase the new vehicles right across the city.

It’s been great to close 2017 with another excellent milestone in a year jam-packed with successful developments for our business. Looking back, just some of the highlights were the introduction of Foyle Metro; completion of the Londonderry railway upgrade and introduction of an hourly service; continued progress for both the North West and Belfast Hub projects; holding our first ever Translink Youth Summit; delivering transport plans for major events like the Irish Open; completing our new Corporate Responsibility Strategy; more high-profile awards success and, of course, celebrating Bus + Train Week.

Our success is testament to all your hard work, skill and dedication. And I know many of you will be working over Christmas and New Year to keep people connected this season. Thank you for your individual contributions that all come together to show everyone why Translink should be Your First Choice for Travel in Northern Ireland.

Finally, a big thank you to everyone who donated gifts for our #StuffABusNI charity toy appeal which finishes tomorrow. Public and staff generosity has been overwhelming with stations across NI playing their part to collect thousands of gifts – a super example of the Translink SPIRIT in action!

Wishing all of you, and your families, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
