This week the Transport Minister Michelle Mcllveen announced the award of a £19 million contract to supply a fleet of 30 vehicles for the new Belfast Rapid Transit (BRT) system. The Belgium-based company Van Hool won the contract and will be supported locally by Road Trucks Limited of Larne.

The new tram-like buses will be built over the next two and a half years and are scheduled to come into service on the new BRT network in September 2018 that will offer faster journey times along dedicated routes in the city – connecting East Belfast, West Belfast and Titanic Quarter via the city centre.

The BRT vehicles will provide a high quality environment for passengers in terms of comfort, space and on-board information. They will also feature the latest technology; audio visual passenger information systems, information screens providing real time journey information, free Wi-Fi and being hybrid vehicles they will be cleaner and more environmentally friendly too.

This is another significant milestone in the BRT project that will transform public transport in Belfast and the introduction of these high quality services will encourage more people to use our services.

With Christmas less than a month away, we have launched our Christmas offers webpage to encourage more people to take advantage of our great value offers and travel by bus and rail over the festive season – www.translink.co.uk/christmas/

On 1 December the new Ulsterbus £2 Day Return Ticket will begin and is available in every town and city (except Belfast) across the network after 9:30am. I would remind you to tell friends and family to avail of the day return ticket for travelling into the local town for some festive shopping and socialising.

There is lots of festive activity planned over the coming weeks for employees and passengers to enjoy. Look out for the station entertainment which will start on 1 December in Central Station.
