Phase 2 Derry~Londonderry line upgrade to start

Group Chief Executive's Weekly Message

2nd June 2015

The commencement of the second phase of the major engineering project to complete re-signalling works and a passing loop on the Coleraine to Londonderry railway line has been confirmed.

Today (2 June) Transport Minister Danny Kennedy announced the contracts have been awarded to complete the re-signalling on the Coleraine to Derry~Londonderry railway line to Babcock, a leading organisation in the UK rail infrastructure market. Local firm, McLaughlin & Harvey, have also been awarded the contract for the construction of a passing loop at Bellarena.

This second phase works is great news for the Northwest and our railway passengers; it demonstrates our commitment to this important rail corridor for the long term. Once the work is completed, it means more frequent and faster journeys are possible on the line. I am sure these improvements will encourage more passengers to come on board with us as we build on the huge success of the line to date.

The work will begin over the summer months and be substantially completed by December 2016. We will publicise a detailed schedule of work and method of work in due course. There will be minimal impact to our passengers as work will primarily carried out during the night. Temporary travel arrangements will be needed during the course of the project such as weekend line closures but this will be communicated as we know the details.

This procurement and contracting process has been challenging and complex and I commend our colleagues in infrastructure who have delivered this result. I also thank the Minister for his continuing support.
