Travel Challenge Success

Group Chief Executive's Weekly Message

12th June 2015

Across the business, colleagues take part in community engagement activities that continue to build positive links between Translink and the general public, promoting public transport as the better way to travel.

"educating and inspiring young people to use sustainable transport"

Yesterday, I attended our annual 'Translink Eco Schools Travel Challenge' Prize Presentation in Central Station. The event rewards pupils who've made an effort to use more sustainable transport for the journey to and from school.

This year, 31 schools across Northern Ireland participated and there was a massive shift away from car use to 'greener' transport modes with over half of all journeys made being sustainable. If all 1,178 schools (320,000 pupils) in Northern Ireland took part in the challenge adopting a similar percentage of sustainable journeys, we could remove 1,365,712 car journeys per year from local roads, significantly reducing congestion at school gates.

I know that a number of our local bus inspectors and train conductors assisted many of these schools in completing their challenge. I'd like to thank each of you for your efforts to educate, inspire and encourage more young people – our customers of the future – to enjoy using sustainable transport and all the benefits it offers.

As you know, it's already been a busy summer and things are really heating up for the The Tall Ships Races, July 2 – 5, which will be a great opportunity to attract new customers.

As part of our build-up to this massive event, we're doing something a little bit different to raise awareness about our summer travel offers while also supporting our charity partner, Macmillan Cancer Care. Our 'Smart Moves Rowing Challenge' is taking place today at Belfast City Hall, 12 – 2pm, with family entertainment and the Citybeat Radio team also on site. If you're passing by, call in and check out all the action!

David Strahan was recently married and is on annual leave for the next few weeks - congratulations to David and his wife on this happy news. During this time I will be Acting Group Chief Executive.
