Bus and Rail Summer Safety

Group Chief Executive's Weekly Message

"Safety is paramount; high standards are maintained for customers, employees and the general public"
6th June 2014

Dear Colleagues,

As I have been visiting our facilities over the past weeks it is immediately clear the work our colleagues do to make sure our services are safe. This is evidence our core value that 'safety is paramount; high standards are maintained for customers, employees and the general public' is being delivered 'on the ground'.

Also important is the activity we do with schools to remind pupils of the importance of taking care around buses and trains, especially in the run up to summer.

You may have heard of 'iPredict', a rail safety 'show' we have put together with Cahoots NI, a local theatre company. The show has toured 26 schools in four weeks (performing to over 3000 children!) and used iPads, technology, and digital media to deliver safety messages about trespass, level crossings and technology distraction. The magic lay in getting these messages heard by a hard-to-reach and young audience, through impressing them with technology while educating them by stealth (which is why we used actors)

Also, the Safety Bus will have a busy summer schedule, bringing groups of young people out for day trips to our depots and maintenance facilities and places like Crawfordsburn and Belfast Zoo. The reason we do this is to put a human face on Translink and show children how their actions affect everyone and a simple act like throwing a stone can have serious impacts on individuals, their families and the wider community.

Keeping employee health and wellbeing to the forefront , Health Week will take place at Metro Central, Upper Queen Street from 9 -13 June and everyone is encouraged to drop by. A nutritionist from Eurest Catering, representatives from Simply Health and our charity partner Macmillan Cancer Support will be in attendance to give advice and information on improving your lifestyle and health. Drop in if you can (and enjoy the new facility while you are there).
