Tall Ships success and funding for railways projects

Group Chief Executive's Weekly Message

10th July 2015

Translink staff really 'pulled together' last weekend to carry many of the 300,000 visitors who came to see the Tall Ships Festival in Belfast. Over the four days of the festival we operated shuttle buses to and from Belfast City Council park and ride sites, Translink park and rides facilities and between the many docks where the tall ships were moored. We also carried thousands of additional passengers on the railway network who were travelling to Belfast especially to join in the Tall Ships celebrations.

I have heard nothing but praise for our efforts, from the efficient arrival and departure of the bus shuttle services, to the provision of additional crew and rolling stock on train services with everyone focusing on the safety and enjoyment of our passengers. Tall Ships organisers hope that the festival will continue to pay dividends to the city and to Northern Ireland and there's no doubt that the lasting positive impression we have left on visitors will encourage many to return in the future.

Also last week, our Minister Danny Kennedy, announced a multi-million funding package for two major rail projects made available through the Connecting Europe Facility. Over £10 million has been allocated to the upgrading of the Coleraine to Derry/Londonderry rail line while the upgrade of tracks on the Knockmore to Lurgan rail line has received almost £7 million. This is great news for the future of the rail network and will no doubt go a long way to helping us achieve our passenger journey growth targets.

Lastly I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who will be working during the July 12th break, which sees the start of the holiday period for many employees.
