Annual Report and Transport Hub developments

Group Chief Executive's Weekly Message

"around 1 million more fare paying passengers"
04th July 2014

Dear Colleagues,

This week we published our Annual Report and Accounts 2013/14 and I am pleased to tell you that we have once again had a very successful year with around 80 million passenger journeys - beating Government targets of 78 million.

Notably, over 1 million more fare paying passengers have chosen to use the bus or train; adding this to the 1.5million last year that makes 2.7million more over the last 2 years.

Customer satisfaction has also stayed at a high level. This is down to us delivering good quality bus and train services with great customer care and good value fares. There have been some challenges along the way; in particular congestion in Belfast has impacted on our bus services. However, we have worked hard to address this and will continue to monitor our performance to make sure we deliver our timetables reliably for our customers.

Other highlights have included developments in our customer information and ticketing with a new 'mobile' website and journey planner app. We have also continued to invest in our bus fleet and infrastructure; this week the new Belfast Transport Hub moved a step closer with the announcement of architect Hiro Aso from John McAslan and Partners along with Arup appointed to develop a masterplan to take the project forward.

They have an extensive portfolio including the Kings Cross Station in London and we look forward to working with them to create a class leading integrated Public Transport Hub that has the potential to be a 'green urban gateway' attracting tourism and investors to Belfast and NI. I look forward to updating you further on this exciting project.

Last weekend our engineers worked through the night to install a new passenger footbridge at Moira Train Station. It was built off site and lifted into position – minimising safety risks and disruption to customers. We have some time lapse footage of the installation which you may find interesting at Once completed later this summer it will enhance passenger safety at the station.

With the arrival of the school holidays we've launched our summer 'Get Up and Go!' campaign to highlight all our bus and rail travel deals and special discounts into top local attractions. This is a great time of year to get new customers looking for 'daycations' on board. We'll also see a number of visitors to our shores so please help them find their way around – I hear our travel desk in Visit Belfast is extremely busy!

Finally, a big thank you to everyone for all your hard work over the last year. Let's build on our track record of success by providing our customers with a positive experience of public transport.
