A 'Good' Employer

"people tell us they have sought out their job with Translink"

Dear Colleagues,

You may ask what we mean when we say 'our people are our strength' – we often talk about the quality, skills, professionalism and performance of our people. I saw for myself what this means recently when I was in the Falls Metro Bus Depot and met colleagues from across the site - the friendliness, teamwork and pride in the job was very evident.

I also had a good chat with the Safety Bus Team – so far 325,000 young people have stepped on board the safety bus to learn more about responsible behaviour while using buses and trains. This is a great initiative; the team obviously enjoy what they are doing and feel it works, reducing anti-social behaviour (and the numbers back this up).

It was clear when visiting Falls Depot how important we are to the local community as a 'good' employer. Of course we provide employment and professional development opportunities across all of Northern Ireland. An example is our Engineering Apprenticeship Programme which over the past two years has taken on 23 apprentices in bus engineering, railway fleet engineering, signalling and telecoms. This programme gives apprentices life-long job skills while providing experience in the workplace.

This year, we will be recruiting for 8 bus engineering apprenticeships - thanks to those involved in delivering this programme and supporting the career development of our apprentices. The apprentices tell us the programme is very useful to them in finding future employment (often staying with us).

You may know that every two weeks we have an induction and introduction session for people joining the company; one thing which more people are telling us at these sessions is that Translink is recognised as a 'good' employer and they have sought out their job with us. That is certainly a reflection on all of us who work here.

Finally, I want to congratulate everyone involved in our fantastic win at the Green Awards in Dublin last night where we picked up first prize in the Green Transport category in recognition of everything we do to promote sustainable travel.
