Visit to Carrickfergus

Group Chief Executive's Weekly Message

"many thanks to all those I met"
30th May 2014

Dear Colleagues,

I recently visited Carrickfergus Train Station and got to meet some of our bus and train colleagues to hear about their day to day tasks and get their thoughts on how things are going for the business. Once again, the pride of local employees in their jobs and their role in making sure our customers get a high quality service was very clear.

This positive attitude is helping to drive the success of rail services on the Larne Line. Growth was over 12% last year and customer feedback is very positive. The popularity of the Park and Ride facilities was also very evident - what started with only six cars now holds over 450 on a daily basis.

While there I also took the opportunity to get 'trackside' with our permanent way infrastructure engineers – which was a very interesting experience for me. I got a better understanding about the complexities of the work and the significant safety implications of what they do. This planning and maintenance work is 'round the clock', and our engineers work through the night and in bad weather to keep rail services running on time for our customers.

In Carrickfergus, as well as the local town and school bus services, there are bus routes to Belfast, carrying many East Antrim commuters. Chatting to the bus drivers based at the station, the extensive road works in the area have clearly brought many challenges for them but they have coped well with the congestion and services are still running relatively smoothly – well done to all.

It was great to meet all the staff at Carrickfergus – there is lots to be proud of in terms of passenger growth and feedback. It has always been an important bus and train market for us; this wouldn't be possible without all the staff working together. Many thanks to all those I met for a very informative visit.
