Translink Annual Report 2012/13

"more fare paying passengers choosing to use our services"
28th June 2013

Dear Colleagues,

This week our annual report for the year 2012/13 was published.  The highlights are that during the year 1.5million more fare paying passengers chose to travel with us, customer satisfaction is high and our financial performance was strong.  This strong financial performance has come from the fact that more people are choosing to use our services and we are holding costs down – revenue is up by 6% and costs only by 3.5% - this means more profits.

There has been considerable coverage of these results.  Our strong performance and success in growing passenger numbers have been noted but some have asked whether, with the profits we have made and the cash that we have, it was necessary to increase fares last month.  Quite simply, we have again made the point that we need to make profits to carry forward into the next year when public funding of bus and train services is reducing (and to pay bills and wages in the meantime!).  This is sensible financial planning.

The level of funding for passenger transport is always of interest to the media.  Public investment in passenger transport last year delivered new trains, new buses and relay of the Derry~Londonderry rail line; this investment should be welcomed - because it works – people want more bus and rail services and new trains and buses.

In addition, the NI Executive funds its own very popular concession fares scheme for over 60s – this is not funding for Translink, but for those who enjoy the free travel – you may also have read about the £7m bailout needed for that scheme.  Lastly, it should be noted that NI is investing much less in relative terms in its bus and rail network than other parts of UK or RoI.

In terms of lower fares, customer satisfaction, growing passenger numbers and on time performance, we compare with the best operators in GB or RoI.  These successes could not have been achieved without our great people who deliver our services every day with professionalism and commitment.  Thank you for your support.
