Bus design

Translink will continue to purchase new accessible buses. While this is possible for some buses solutions to provide access, particularly for wheelchair users, to coaches and some other vehicles have not yet been fully developed.

When appropriate means of access are identified Translink will seek to introduce such vehicles as resources permit. In the interim it may not be possible for some people with disabilities including wheelchair users to travel on such vehicles.

Translink are happy to provide reasonable assistance. However we regret to inform you that due to health and safety requirements staff are not permitted to carry out manual handling involving people or heavy equipment.

Translink hope you will appreciate the present situation is one that is outside its control and in no way undermines the Company’s commitment to providing accessible bus services. If you are in any doubt as to whether a vehicle is suitable for your needs please contact Translink staff.

Translink buses have particular features to assist people to use them more easily. Newer buses have low floors enabling wheelchair users and mothers with prams to board easily. Remaining buses with step entrances have colour contrasted handrails. Some have palm push bells with visual signs indicating the bus will be stopping as well as a kneeling facility to make boarding easier. Do not be afraid to ask bus drivers to kneel the bus if this makes it easier for you to board.

If you have any doubts on whether you can board a bus, please express your views to Translink staff when planning your journey. People who are deaf or hard of hearing may take guide, hearing or assistance dogs on board buses. Bus staff are also issued with note pads to communicate with people who are deaf or hard of hearing. However, it will be helpful if you make staff aware of your particular needs.

Trains

Passengers can board all trains by steps or passenger ramps. Some trains are over twenty years old and may not have all the modern facilities offered on new trains. Nevertheless, it should still be possible to gain easy access to trains for most people with disabilities.

If you have any doubts please express your views to Translink staff when planning your journey. People who are deaf or hard of hearing may take guide, hearing or assistance dogs on board trains. Newer trains have audio and visual information systems.

Staff are also issued with note pads to communicate with people who are deaf or hard of hearing. If you are deaf or hard of hearing, it will be helpful if you make staff aware of your particular needs. This is especially important when travelling on trains that do not have visual information systems. The different types of trains and some of the facilities are listed next in chronological order.
