Translink On Track for Record Half a Million Surge in Journeys this Christmas

22 December 2016

Translink is forecasting more than 500,000 additional bus and train passenger journeys will be made in the 4 weeks before Christmas compared to the same period last year.

The record-breaking surge in passengers follows the launch of Translink’s Christmas Campaign featuring excellent value for money offers. Announcing the impressive passenger growth, Translink Group Chief Executive Chris Conway said:
“More than 500,000 additional journeys have been taken on public transport this festive season, removing 312,500 cars from local roads & significantly cutting down on congestion -  good news for everyone in Northern Ireland!
“We’ve made a huge effort to provide our customers with travel offers that make Christmas more affordable and hassle-free. More people are now enjoying the benefits of public transport having made Translink their first choice for travel.
“We’ve worked closely with stakeholders right across Northern Ireland including local councils, business and tourism bodies to spread our festive message far and wide and this joined-up approach is proving a real success!
“With such high numbers travelling at peak times, services are extremely busy and we’re running every available bus, coach and train. We appreciate our customers’ patience as colleagues right across the business work hard to keep Northern Ireland on the move this Christmas.
“Our customers tell us they’re really enjoying the great discount fares and comfortable services with big hits being free returns on all Ulsterbus & Goldline services, a £2.50 Metro day ticket, extended Park & Ride opening hours and a third-off day return train tickets. As the festive season gets into full swing, we’re now looking forward to welcoming even more people on board our services – simply visit to plan your own festive journeys,” said Chris.

Infrastructure Minister, Chris Hazzard MLA said:

“My Department recently consulted on its Programme for Government target to grow numbers using public transport.  I am glad to say we are already making progress. Encouraging greater use of the bus and rail network will help to support local communities and businesses,  drive economic growth and reduce congestion.

“At this time of year there is a significant increase in the number of people travelling into our towns and cities for work, education, shopping and night-life.   All the signs are that the Translink fares initiative has increased use of public transport on Metro and outside Belfast on the Ulsterbus and rail network and I welcome that.

“The fare promotions and additional services on public transport were part of a range of transport incentives developed by my Department, Translink and for Metro with Belfast City Council.  An extension to park and ride opening hours and a road works embargo has also helped to ensure smoother traffic flow and a better experience for traders and shoppers alike.”

Welcoming the success of Translink’s Christmas travel package, Lord Mayor of Belfast Alderman Brian Kingston said:
“We’ve worked closely with Translink to develop an attractive travel package and help spread some festive cheer with news of superb ticket discounts and convenient services. With more people on board public transport we’re also reducing congestion, taking thousands of cars off local roads ensuring everyone can enjoy the City’s great shopping, entertainment and attractions. This time of year is extremely important to the City’s economy so we’re really encouraged by this latest announcement that hopefully heralds a very successful and prosperous Christmas for Belfast,” said Ald. Kingston.
Visit Belfast Chief Executive Gerry Lennon said:

“Excellent public transport is an important element of servicing our visitors whether from around Northern Ireland or from further afield. Translink’s great value travel packages were a key feature in this year’s Christmas marketing campaign to attract day and overnight trips to Belfast by bus, rail or car.  The campaign was supported by Translink, Belfast One, Belfast Chamber of Trade and Commerce, Belfast City Council and others, and was all about attracting increased footfall and spend into the city during the festive period to soak up the delights of the markets, enjoy the great retail offering and the vibrant nightlife. This significant increase in people making use of public transport is a strong indication of a successful trading period for the city.”
