(extract taken from Summer 2008 Expresslines)
1. What does your job involve?
I am involved with the day-to-day running of the station, working at the ticket barrier or out on the platform, my main role is to work with passengers. We give them directions to their trains, information on a host of topics, deal with any complaints and sometimes take ticket revenue at the barrier.
2. How long have you worked for Translink?
I’ve been with the company since October 2007.
3. What special qualities do you need for your job?
I’d say you need to be able to stay calm in tight situations, and have a ready smile. On top of being well organised and well presented you need to be approachable. Also the ability not to take to heart anything said in the heat of the moment by a member of the public.
4. What aspects of your job do you enjoy most?
I enjoy the fact that no two days are the same and I’m not doing the same thing continually. In dealing with the public you come across loads of interesting little situations each day. I enjoy chatting with the passengers, especially the older ones: a little chat can make their day. I prefer to be out on the platform than in behind the barrier.
5. What do you find most challenging about your job?
Dealing with passengers at rush hour when there are any delays on the trains can sometimes be stressful. No matter what we do, at times it can seem wrong in the eyes of a tired and delayed passenger.
6. Who do you report to?
I report to the Senior Customer Services Co-ordinator at Great Victoria Street Station, Ciaran Maguire.
7. What departments or colleagues within the company do you have contact with through your job?
There are usually four or five Customer Service Co-ordinators on duty at a time at GVS. We work alongside the Inspectors at the stations, and with the on-board train conductors. We liaise with the Long Line Public Address staff to ask that customer announcements are made on board trains. At times, if there are platform changes etc, we would need to contact the Inspectors or NIR Control.
8. What do you like to do in your free time?
I like to work out and go to the gym, as I’m trying to keep my fitness up. I also enjoy spending time looking after my 14-month-old daughter. When I can find the time I like to play golf.
9. Where has your favourite holiday destination been?
The best holiday I ever had was in Cancun, Mexico. I was on honeymoon and the hotel was right on the beach, the whole holiday was a very good experience. Plus, we were especially lucky to have boarded the last plane to leave the area just ahead of the terrible tornado that struck.
10. What car would you love to have, money no object?
I’d buy an Aston Martin DV9.
11. Who would you hate to be stuck in a lift with?
I’d hate to be stuck in a lift with Ciaran Maguire – because all he would talk about is Man United – and I support Liverpool!
12. If you won the lottery, where would you like to live?
I’d probably choose to live in Las Vegas as it’s a city that never sleeps – there’d always be something to do!
13. If you had to change career, what would you like to be?
An astronaut! Then I’d be one step closer to the stars.
