NI ready for a crackin' Christmas thanks to Translink

4 December 2017

Translink has launched a festive travel package featuring discount fares and late night services to ensure shoppers and commuters in Belfast can make their all-important journeys this Christmas.  Discounts are available on Metro, NI Railways and Park and Ride services throughout December plus day return travel for the price of a single ticket on Goldline and Ulsterbus.

Residents and visitors to Belfast can enjoy a special £3 Metro day ticket which offers unlimited travel in the city, after 9.30am. Park and Ride sites including Blacks Road, Cairnshill, Dundonald and Sprucefield are offering special discounts, enhanced services and late opening throughout December.

For the first time ever, during the festive season special ‘Night Mover’ services including midnight departures will operate on Metro, NI Railways and Goldline (online booking available) on Fridays and Saturdays, Dec 1 – 22, across selected routes – perfect for late night shopping or festive nights-out approaching the big day.

For families looking for a fun day out in Belfast, the Metro Friends and Family ticket (£9) provides unlimited travel for two adults and four children across the Metro Network, and from 16th December 2017 – 1st January 2018 it’s available for just £7.

For those travelling further afield, a Translink Family and Friends £22 ticket offers one day’s unlimited travel in Northern Ireland for up to two adults and four children across all services on weekdays after 9.30am and all day Saturdays and Sundays – reduced to just £17 from 16th December 2017 – 1st January 2018.

Translink is also offering an Enterprise Family & Friends Day Return ticket for £50 to Dublin for two adults and up to four children travelling after 9.30am. Full details are available online at www.translink.co.uk/christmas/ .

Announcing the Christmas travel package, Chris Conway, Translink Group Chief Executive, said:  “Every Christmas we make it our priority to introduce a selection of discount tickets for customers to enjoy good value hassle-free travel over the festive season – cutting the cost of Christmas. Top of our list is also ensuring our customers’ travel plans run smoothly during what can be an extremely busy travel period across NI.

“As a result of our festive package, we hope to give the local retail and hospitality sector in Belfast a boost during their busiest time of the year by transporting more people to cities and towns right across Northern Ireland,” continued Mr Conway.

But it’s not all work and no play for Translink over the festive season with special activities planned to give back during the season of goodwill. “We do our best every year to bring the Christmas spirit to life in our stations and on-board services with an exciting line-up of special festive entertainment.

This year we’re also calling on everyone to help us fill a bus full of toys in aid of St. Vincent De Paul and the Salvation Army. In partnership with U105, we’re launching our first ever ‘Stuff A Bus’ Toy Appeal so keep an eye out for drop-off points in selected stations.

“We’re also supporting the PSNI #safehome campaign, reminding passengers not to drink alcohol on-board Translink services and to always respect fellow passengers and staff. So with plenty of festive travel offers, surprises and entertainment planned, we would like to wish all our passengers a very Happy Christmas,” said Chris.

Speaking at the launch of Translink’s 2017 festive travel campaign, Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Nuala McAllister, encouraged people to travel by public transport saying:

“Belfast City Council is delighted to support Translink’s 2017 festive travel campaign. We want to make it as easy as possible for people to visit the city, particularly over the festive period and using public transport is an easy way of doing this. It takes you into the heart of the city so you don’t have to worry about parking and the use of bus lanes helps makes it faster and more efficient.”

Retail NI Chief Executive Glyn Roberts said:

“Retail NI is delighted to support Translink’s fantastic offer to Christmas shoppers. We would particularly urge shoppers who don’t usually use public transport, to give it a try this Christmas and leave the car at home”

Rajesh Rana, Belfast Chamber of Trade & Commerce added:

“Access in and out of Belfast is of the utmost important to all of our members, from businesses to staff to shoppers, particularly throughout the busy festive period. Public transport is an excellent, stress-free way to get in and out of the city with ease and in a cost-effective manner.

“Belfast Chamber of Trade and Commerce supports this Festive Translink campaign and encourages as many people as possible to avail of the fantastic service and offers.”
