Site Visit from Craft Training to North-West Multi-Modal Transport Hub

14 May 2019

Translink, alongside our contractor Farrans, were delighted to host a recent visit by locally-based Craft Training at the North-West Multi-Modal Transport Hub site, located at the Grade-B listed Waterside Train Station in Derry~Londonderry.  This brought together a group of young people from across the city in order to gain a better understanding of this major project and the opportunities presented by the construction and engineering industries via an Employability Skills workshop.

Representing an investment of around £27 million, funding for this major project has been secured from the European Union’s INTERREG VA Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB), with match funding provided by the Department for Infrastructure and the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport in the Republic of Ireland.

The project will include the refurbishment of the Grade B-listed Waterside Train Station as a sustainable, multi-modal transport hub, which will include an Active Travel Centre, a greenway link to the city centre via the iconic Peace Bridge, a new park and ride facility and a bus turning circle. Phase 1 works, focusing on the station itself and associated track and signalling works, will complete in late 2019, with the entirety of the project reaching completion during 2020.

The site visit was an informative experience for those in attendance, who gained a better understanding of the project’s scope, as well as a valuable insight into a career in construction or engineering.

Lisa McFadden, Translink’s Project Manager for the North-West Multi-Modal Transport Hub, said: ‘Translink is pleased to work with Farrans in facilitating a bespoke Employability Skills and Careers/Apprenticeships in Construction workshops to a Craft Training delegation, which will assist young people pursuing careers within the construction industry.

‘‘The recent visit was facilitated on-site at the North-West Multimodal Transport Hub by the Joint Venture Project based at the Waterside Train Station in Derry~Londonderry.

‘‘The programme included a site tour conducted by the Project Team, which gave them a real insight into what it’s like to work on one of Translink’s most important projects.

‘‘We’re delighted to have facilitated this visit, and wish the young people well in their future paths.’’
