Schools hit the headlines with Little Reporters Launch

25 March 2019

Attention teachers! Entry deadline 1 May 2019 for Translink & Belfast Telegraph competition.

Editor of the Belfast Telegraph, Gail Walker and Translink Group CEO Chris Conway were in Belfast today to launch this year’s Little Reporters competition, a journalism project for Primary 5-7 pupils in Northern Ireland.

Now in its third year, the competition encourages young people to develop their writing, interviewing and reporting skills while learning more about the important role public transport plays in connecting people and opportunities.

This year, pupils have the chance to win a £1,000 cash prize for their class, a masterclass in journalism, a reporting excursion with free coach travel and the chance to write their own news story to be published in the Belfast Telegraph. To enter they simply must work individually or as a group to come up with an answer to the question: ‘Why are the bus and train so important?’.

The entries will be judged by a team of award-winning journalists and experts from Translink with the lucky class being given the coveted title, “Translink Little Reporters 2019” as well as the other fantastic prizes worth more than £3,000 in total!

Speaking at the launch, Chris Conway, Translink Group Chief Executive, said:  “It’s great to bring our Translink Little Reporters competition back as part of our annual Bus + Train Week campaign. We’re looking forward to seeing pupils examine public transport and exercise their journalism skills. By working in partnership with the Belfast Telegraph once more, we hope to develop writing and reading skills amongst local primary school children.”

Gail Walker, Editor of the Belfast Telegraph, said: “This is a super opportunity for the journalists of the future to get an insight into what it's really like to report news, working as a team against the clock to produce informative and engaging content. The entries always make for entertaining reading - and sometimes there are even a few exclusives in there too! And it's always great to welcome the winning class to the Belfast Telegraph newsroom."

Closing date for entries is midnight on Wednesday 1st May. Entries can be submitted via online form at: www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/littlereporters or, for those who prefer to enter by post, a PDF entry form can be downloaded at this link.
