Glider Wows at Bus and Train Week

21 June 2018

Glider has been a star feature of Bus and Train Week 2018, Translink’s annual celebration of public transport!

In a week of great customer offers and fun-filled events at Translink stations and depots across Northern Ireland, Glider was a major point of interest in a series of venues across Belfast, including at City Hall, Titanic Slipways and Dundonald Park and Ride.

Excitement is building for the launch of Belfast’s new rapid transit system, scheduled to go live on 3 September – this will transform public transport in Belfast, representing a new, effortless way to travel on an east/west corridor, running from Dundonald park and ride site to McKinstry Road roundabout via Ballyhackamore, the city centre and Andersonstown. There will also be an integrated service running from the city centre to Titanic Quarter.

A range of local representatives and other stakeholders, along with the wider public, were welcomed onboard a Glider vehicle at Belfast City Hall on 4 June. The good weather coupled with  the city centre location attracted a large crowd of visitors to see the vehicle for themselves and grab a Glider goodie bag!  On 5 June, Glider was present at Titanic Slipways for the launch of the Ulster in Bloom competition, where invited guests, including the city’s newly appointed Lord Mayor, Cllr Deirdre Hargey, were treated to a look around – staff in Titanic Quarter businesses also took the opportunity to acquaint themselves with their new mode of transport!

The Glider provided an early-morning attraction for customers using Dundonald Park and Ride, as commuters were introduced to their new service vehicle and went on their way with a pick-me-up cup of tea or coffee.

Robin Totten, Translink’s Glider Senior Programme Manager, said: ‘‘Bus and Train Week is a very special time of the year for Translink, and it  presented Team Glider with a golden opportunity to talk to the broader public about this significant change to their travel options in Belfast.  We have been hugely encouraged by the positive reaction from customers and even from those who won’t directly benefit from the service”.

Alongside colleagues from the Department for Infrastructure, Translink will continue to give the wider community an opportunity to fully acquaint themselves with Glider before the launch date in early September. Look out for forthcoming events on our social media posts and via our website.

Representing a total investment of over £90 million, Glider is a key Programme for Government priority, led by the Department for Infrastructure.  The service, operated by Translink, will bring highly positive changes to public transport in Belfast, including a new off-vehicle ticketing system, service frequency of 7-8 minutes at throughout most of the day and improved connectivity.  Glider is bringing great excitement to the city streets, and rightly so  - it is a modern, vibrant, eco-friendly transport system for a confident, outward-looking 21st Century city, a real vote of confidence in Belfast’s future. It also represents another milestone in our journey to making public transport your first choice for travel in Northern Ireland.
