Translink is committed to managing, monitoring and reporting upon our annual energy consumption at our facilities. For the financial year 2009/10 our energy consumption was 31,061 MWh.

In recognition for managing and reducing carbon emissions Translink have recently been accredited with the Carbon Trust Standard.

Translink is committed to purchasing a minimum of 20% of total electricity supplies from renewable sources. This target has been met and exceeded for several years and from the 1st October 2009, 100% of our electricity has been from renewable sources.

In addition to renewable electricity supplies, Translink are also lowering CO2 emissions through a number of other activities:

  • Rolling programme of Energy surveys at a variety of sites with targeted actions arising.
  • Staff energy awareness programme.
  • Display ‘poster’ campaign encouraging energy efficiency and awareness.
  • Significant investment in energy efficient lighting in buildings and vehicles.
  • Eco-driving training.

Translink energy facts: 2009/10

Electricity

Translink’s total electricity consumption for 2009/10 was 13,924MWh. This represents a reduction of 1.6% on 2008/09.

Natural Gas

Translink’s total natural gas consumption for 2009/10 was 5,920MWh. This is a decrease of 7% on 2009. The increase in 2008/09 was from converting one of our largest depots from oil to natural gas heating; this represents a significant reduction in carbon emissions.

Heating Oil

Translink’s deliveries of heating oil for 2009/10 were 11,217 MWh, an increase of 10% on 2008/09.  It should be noted that last winter was the coldest in 30 years. Annual variations are partly attributed to order quantities and delivery cycles.

Translink works closely with organisations such as the Energy Saving Trust in order to promote awareness of energy issues to our employees and public. This has included a number of initiatives such as energy awareness road shows and competitions run in the company magazine.

Translink Carbon Emissions

We have also been working in partnership with Carbon Trust since 2004. They have assisted us in developing ways to reduce our carbon footprint and save energy. Carbon Trust has provided training for our staff and helped us identify and implement energy saving opportunities.

Translink were recently accredited with the Carbon Trust Standard.
