Double Deckers are back!!

25 March 2001

Translink are delighted to announce the return of the famous Double Decker bus which is set to return to the streets of Belfast within weeks. In total, twenty new Double Deckers will be joining the Citybus (now Metro) fleet.

Translink’s Managing Director Ted Hesketh explained, "We are extremely pleased to announce details of this major order for the bus fleet of Northern Ireland. The return of the Double Decker vehicle represents a major step in the development of a modern and safe public transport system and is a sign of our confidence in future passenger volumes in Belfast".

He continued, "Passengers will find the new Double Decker vehicles bear very little resemblance to the old buses, last purchased for Belfast in 1975. All vehicles are fitted out to very high standards of passenger comfort and convenience".

He added, "They will conform with the very latest Disability Discrimination Act standards. This not only benefits passengers with disabilities including wheelchair users, but is also a major benefit to mothers with babies and young children".

In addition to the twenty Double Deckers, thirty five single deck buses are currently being constructed with the total project costing almost £7m.

Mr Hesketh is also delighted that local industries have benefited from the construction of the new vehicles. "The twenty bodies of the Double Deckers were assembled in Alexanders of Mallusk while the thirty five single deck buses are being built in Wrights of Ballymena", he added.
