3. Current Status

This section reviews progress towards achieving the targets in the Regional Transport Strategy 2002-2012 and Belfast Metropolitan Transport Plan 2005-2015.

NI Railways - Target for 2012

Retain services north of Whitehead and north and north-west of Ballymena, subject to successful results from the introduction of new trains, with improved infrastructure on the rest of the network.

 

Services retained to 2009 under “Option 2” of the Railway Review Group (2004/05); track life extension work / removal of wet beds north of Ballymena underway to increase line speeds. 

 

Appraisal for and design of track relay Coleraine to Derry funded under draft budget 2008/11

All current trains, with the exception of Enterprise services, replaced by new trains, specifically Class 450 replaced by new trains with provision for increased capacity.

The Plan also proposes a number of Strategic Park & Ride facilities at locations further away from the urban centre on the rail network at Carrickfergus, Trooperslane, Greenisland, Lisburn, West Lisburn, Bangor and Holywood and on the bus networks at Sandyknowes on the Antrim corridor, Sprucefield on the Lisburn corridor and Carryduff on the Downpatrick corridor.

 

Temporary overflow facility (230 spaces) being planned for Carrickfergus – indicative date of opening 2008 Q2.  Current indicative date of opening for Ballymartin / Templepatrick is 2010.  Similarly, expanded facilities at Lisburn, Bangor and Carrickfergus are estimated to open 2011

The introduction of further bus priority measures on sections of the strategic Motorway network e.g. M1 Corridor between Stockman’s Lane and Lisburn and the M2 at Sandyknowes on the inbound direction between Fortwilliam and Duncrue Street.

 

Bus lane operational on hard shoulder of M1.  M2 (Sandyknowes) became operational Nov 2007

Local Park & Ride developments at Fortwilliam on the M2 Corridor and Kennedy Way on the Lisburn Corridor, Cairnshill on the Downpatrick Corridor, Millmount on the Newtownards Corridor and at Tillysburn on the Bangor Corridor, providing up to 3,000 spaces with associated bus based public transport services.

 

Sprucefield Park & Ride commenced August 2006; successful.  The indicative date of opening for Cairnshill remains Q3/2008.

 

Note - Cairnshill was considered to be the pilot scheme for Fortwilliam, Kennedy Way but as the draft budget only contains service funding for Cairnshill, starting in 2010 the start dates for these other schemes is receding back towards the end of the plan period
