It is the eleventh time that schools in the Southern Education and Library Board area have picked up the Cup and Emily is also only the third girl to achieve the top performance.
The special presentation ceremony took place in Laganside Buscentre and was attended by senior representatives from the Department of the Environment’s Road Safety Branch, CCEA, Department of Education, Southern Education & Library Board as well as the winners’ schools and families.
Presenting the Cup to Emily & John, Translink Chairman Veronica Palmer OBE said:
“The importance of road safety cannot be underestimated especially amongst younger people. Road traffic collisions and fatalities in Northern Ireland are prevailing concerns and remind all of us of the urgent need to educate people on the skills required to cope with all types of road and driving conditions.
“Road Safety has always been top of Translink’s agenda. As Northern Ireland’s largest school transport provider carrying over 65,000 pupils daily, we have developed innovative education initiatives such as our School Safety Bus and TravelSafe DVD to clearly communicate key safety messages to young people in particular.
“The Ulsterbus Cup Presentation, in association with the Department of the Environment, further demonstrates our 100% commitment to highlighting the importance of safe and responsible road user behaviour. Both John and Emily possess an exemplary understanding of this important subject and I congratulate both of them on this wonderful achievement.”
Also praising John and Emily’s accomplishment, Carol Wilkinson, Manager of DOE’s Road Safety Education Officer Service said:
“While there has been a reduction in road traffic casualties in recent years, the Department of the Environment is determined to see further reductions. Educating young people about the importance of road safety is of critical importance in establishing responsible attitudes and behaviours from an early age and in instilling the right attitudes and behaviours in tomorrow’s drivers. These are fundamental life skills.
