The Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Tom Hartley joins Colin Taylor, Metro Operations Manager, Translink and witches’ Emma Nugent and Eliza Downey for the launch of the 2008 Metro Monster Mash.

It’s fast approaching the time of year when witches, ghosts and their familiars come out to play - and Hallowe’en in Belfast will be the most fangtastic and spooktacular yet.

The 2008 ‘Metro Monster Mash’ takes place at Clarendon Dock on Friday 31 October.

Launching this year’s event, Lord Mayor Tom Hartley commented:

“Once again, the ‘Metro Monster Mash’ will offer a fantastic feast for the senses, with a crazy carnival, magical music and a truly magnificent fireworks display, in what promises to be a spectacular Hallowe’en extravaganza.”

The main entertainment programme begins at Clarendon Dock (beside the former Seacat terminal) at 6.30pm, with compère Carolyn Stewart and the U105 roadshow.

This will be followed by a performance from the Open Arts Choir, stars of the recent BBC television ‘Last Choir Standing’ competition.

More than 40 street entertainers and all sorts of surprises will keep revellers on their toes and looking over their shoulders throughout the evening, which culminates with the biggest fireworks display ever seen in Northern Ireland.

Commenting on the entertainment programme, Peter McVerry, Station Manager with U105, said:

“We are delighted to be involved again this year with the Belfast City Council’s Halloween celebrations.  It is one of the biggest nights of the year and having our own Carolyn Stewart at the centre of the festivities, playing great music and leading the party means it will be a night to remember.”

To ensure that all the little elves and pixies as well as witches, warlocks and their familiars can make their way to and from the spooktacle, our partners Translink Metro once again will be operating their free ‘ghost bus’ shuttle service – complete with special onboard fancy dress competitions.

Translink Central Area Manager Billy Gilpin said:

“Our complimentary shuttle bus service removes the hassle of car-parking at the venue and, as an added bonus, the creepiest witch, ghost or ghoul onboard will also receive a fantastic prize.

“This year, the Halloween celebrations also coincide with our Metro Fridays campaign which offers passengers great food, drink, entertainment and travel deals. So, for those who want to be truly spellbound this Hallowe’en I recommend they do the Metro Monster Mash.”

Buses will leave Chichester Street for Clarendon Dock, dropping off in Corporation Square, every 15 minutes from 6pm – 8pm.  Return shuttle buses will operate from Corporation Square to City Hall from 8.30pm – 9.30pm.
