The ‘clock’s ticking’ with the launch of this year’s Translink Ulster in Bloom Art Competition

1st September 2008:

As the 20th anniversary of one of the most iconic surrealists in art approaches, Translink is paying homage to all things Dali for the 2008/09 Translink Ulster in Bloom art competition, launched today.

Translink is inviting year 8, 9, 10 and special education pupils to get inspired by Dali’s dream-like landscapes, optical illusions and futuristic environments – playing on the idea that objects are not always as they seem.

Translink Communications Manager, Lynda Shannon explained, “Every year we see standards and creativity levels rise and so we must find new themes to really challenge our young artists. This year with Dali as our inspiration I have no doubt we will uncover some ‘superb surrealists’.

“Dali used a range of visual media, leaving behind a huge collection of works including oils, watercolours, drawings, graphics, sculptures, films, photographs, performance pieces, jewels and objects of all descriptions. Examining his most famous works should encourage pupils to experiment with a range of techniques when creating their pieces.”

She continued, “Ulster in Bloom allows pupils across Northern Ireland to explore their local landscapes through an appreciation of their environment, and allows their works to be seen by both a local and worldwide audience. Perhaps it may even inspire some to pursue a career in art!”

Dali’s artisan skills are often attributed to the influence of Renaissance masters, with his best known work, The Persistence of Memory, completed in 1931. Born in 1904 he painted for nearly seven decades until his death in January 1989.

The closing date for entry in the Translink Ulster in Bloom schools art competition is Friday December 19 2008 with great travel prizes for winning pupils’ classes and their families up for grabs in each of the four categories - years 8, 9, 10 and Special Education.

Details and rules of the competition have been issued to all eligible schools. Further competition information is available by contacting Morrow Communications on 028 9039 3837 or by logging on to www.translink.co.uk

All entries should be no larger than A3, should clearly display the pupil’s name, school and year group on the reverse and be posted to Morrow Communications, Hanwood House, Pavilions Office Park, Holywood, BT18 9JQ.
