11 May 2008:
-£3.4million investment to bring 1000 additional seats-
Thanks to a £3.4million investment Translink is to add 20 new, Metro double deckers to its fleet today (12 May). Providing around 1000 additional seats for Belfast passengers each day, 7 of the vehicles will supplement the existing fleet, while the remaining 13 replace older vehicles.
Translink Central Area Manager, Billy Gilpin explained, “The introduction of these new buses allows us to improve further comfort, quality and reliability. In addition, frequency on the popular 4A Newtownards Road Metro corridor has, from today, been increased to every 7-8 minutes during the peak periods. They will also help minimise the impact of increasing congestion in the city as more buses will be operated across the main Metro corridors.”
“The new buses also allow us to increase the number of fully accessible services we offer,” Mr Gilpin continued. “This not only benefits passengers with disabilities, but is also a major benefit to the elderly and parents with young children.
“Metro continues to be a huge success and is central to the city’s development as it becomes more cosmopolitan. Around half a million people a week are using Metro – resulting in approximately 38,000 fewer cars on Belfast roads every week. We hope that these latest developments will encourage even more people to choose Metro as the better way to travel,” he said.
New timetables for Metro services commencing 12 May are available from the Metro Kiosk in Donegal Square West, by contacting Translink’s call centre on 028 9066 6630 or visiting www.translink.co.uk.
News of this latest procurement comes hot on the heels of a further investment, which has seen 20 new, high specification Goldline coaches recently take to Northern Ireland’s roads.
