A Valentine’s Brief Encounter With QFT And NI Railways!

4th February 2008:

To celebrate QFT's Valentine's Day screening of Brief Encounter, Michael Kelly, QFT Box Office Manager and Maura Gallagher, Brand Co-ordinator with Translink recreate a scene from the Oscar-nominated classic and launch a search for true-life romantic stories.

If you have had any ‘brief encounters’ on a train or at a train station or met the love of your life there, please email your stories to s.hughes@qub.ac.uk for the chance to win free tickets to QFT and a 1st class return trip for two people on the Enterprise from Belfast to Dublin!

Queen’s Film Theatre invites you to celebrate Valentine’s Day in style with a screening of the Oscar-nominated classic Brief Encounter, a story of forbidden passions in 1940s suburbia.

After a chance meeting at a railway station tearoom, Doctor Alec Harvey and housewife Laura Jesson (both happily married) embark on a chaste, yet passionate, affair at a time when infidelity was unthinkable.

Adapted from Noel Coward's play Still Life, this taut melodrama, shot in noirish black and white, is full of restraint and yet charged with feeling. Misery and obsession go hand in hand to the strains of a turbulent Rachmaninov concerto. Here, decency and honour win the day over the tragic brevity of love.

To celebrate this special screening, QFT has teamed up with NI Railways for a special Valentine's Day offer.  If you travel by train on Valentine's Day, bring your valid ticket to QFT for a free rose and a complimentary QFT Membership for two people - (value £70!) - which entitles you to £2 discount each per screening, including for Brief Encounter itself!

We are also keen to discover whether the idea of railway stations as a hotbed of romance still exists.  Have you had any ‘brief encounters’ on a train or at a train station?  Did you meet your girlfriend, boyfriend, husband or wife on a train, or have you seen a long lost love there, but not managed to speak to them?  Have you caught a certain someone’s eye and wondered – ‘what if’?  Well, QFT wants to hear from you!

Please send your stories (maximum 200 words) to s.hughes@qub.ac.uk by Monday 11th February.  The best story we receive will win a return 1st class train trip for two on the Enterprise from Belfast to Dublin, as well as a pair of complimentary tickets for the Valentine's Night screening of Brief Encounter at QFT.
