24th December 2007:
2007 has been yet another very successful year for Translink with passenger numbers and support on the increase.
Ciaran Rogan, Marketing Executive comments, “This year has been a real success with many highlights throughout the year. Research carried out in the first part of this year shows that our passenger’s believe that Translink bus and rail services are the best ever since records began in 1994. Metro, NI Railways and Ulsterbus all showed ongoing improvements in all things important to passengers, ‘punctuality, value for money, passenger comfort, helpfulness and cleanliness’.
“People using the buses are up 4.4% year on year which equates to an extra 2.8million passengers or about 45,000 full bus loads more! Elsewhere the success continues with the railways carrying 8.7% more passenger this year which is about 750,000 extra passengers! These successes are due to the ongoing support our passengers have given us over the past 12 months and there can be no greater endorsement of the success and benefit of the improvements we have introduced across Metro, NI Railways and the wider public transport network, than such terrific growth in passenger numbers. A real vote of confidence for public transport!
“At the end of this year we also welcomed the draft budget 2008-2011 which outlined provision for the purchase of 200 new buses, 20 new trains and funding for track life extension works north of Ballymena and the commencement of a major track relay project between Coleraine and Derry. It also allowed for significant improvement works on the rail line between Knockmore and Lurgan and the extension of the Concessionary Fares Scheme to introduce Free travel on public transport to all those over 60 years and over from those over 65 years but this excludes all Ireland or cross border travel.”
“Also this year, we celebrated after Belfast Central Station received the top accolade at the International Best Station Awards. It also won the large station category for a second year in a row; Belfast Central beat off competition from 15 other stations across Ireland, UK and Europe. Judging took place in September with the panel assessing stations in terms of passenger facilities, customer service, cleanliness, community involvement and innovation.
