New Ulsterbus services take to the roads in Newry

Passengers in the Newry area are benefiting from new improved Ulsterbus services from today (19 February) which have been enhanced as part of Translink’s ongoing Ulsterbus Strategic Review.

The changes, which were announced at the beginning of this year, include a new, modernised and standardised route network, easy to use colour-coded route maps, simplified clock face timetabling and hourly frequencies on City services from Monday to Saturday.

Translink’s District Manager for Newry, Greg McLaughlin, explained, “Our Ulsterbus Strategic Review is enabling us to improve bus services and passenger information for our customers across Northern Ireland on an area by area basis.”

He continued, “Some of the key improvements we have made for our passengers in the Newry area are the introduction of enhanced hourly services between Newry and Rathfriland and increased frequency and more regular services between Newry and Armagh. These developments compliment other recent improvements already introduced on Goldline Express services such as the half hourly service on the 238 Newry to Belfast route during peak times which also incorporates Sprucefield Park and Ride (238A).

“By investing in fleet and infrastructure, such as the new low-floor vehicles, we have also been able to improve accessibility for parents with small children as well as those with mobility issues.”

From today passengers can also take advantage of a special £1.70 fare allowing unlimited day travel on the day of purchase only on Newry City services identified within the boundary of the Newry City service map. In addition, the initial £1.50 charge for Smartcards, for use on local services, will be waived until 25th March, meaning passengers only pay for their journeys.

Translink’s Ulsterbus Strategic Review will be completed over three years and is designed to transform attractiveness, effectiveness and efficiency of Ulsterbus services.  It is designed to build on the successes of the Belfast Metro and new improved Goldline services (14% and 22% growth respectively), and to maximise integration with NI Railways and Goldline Express services.

Passengers who would like further information about the new Ulsterbus Newry City and County Key services or a copy of the new timetable can contact Translink’s Call Centre on 028 9066 6630 or alternatively contact the Newry Depot on 028 3026 3531.
