Metro ‘connects’ with passengers

1 November 2007:

Newly released figures from Translink show over 20% growth on Metro services since they were launched in February 2005, equating to 500,000 passengers now using Metro services each week and 38,000 fewer cars on the road. However the company has said it will not rest on its laurels. A new advertising campaign 'Metro connects' rolls out from next week across bus shelters, Adshels, phone kiosks and broadcast and print media, and the centrepiece for the campaign will be a television advert entitled ‘Ribbons’. The new Metro advertisement’s ribbon motif ‘connects’ commuters (from left) Nicola Adamson, Paul Kernoghan and Anthony Notorantonio.

Figures newly released by Translink shows over 20% growth on Metro services since they were launched in February 2005, equating to 500,000 passengers now using Metro services each week and 38,000 fewer cars on the road.

The company has attributed the success to new vehicles and improved punctuality, clear and enhanced timetabling with more frequent services and to better communication with passengers, but has said it will not rest on its laurels.

“Belfast is an increasingly vibrant city with more to do and see than ever before. The development of the city has been mirrored by the development of our public transport service and now Metro plays a very central role in Belfast city life,” said Translink Marketing Executive, Ciaran Rogan

“Growth to this extent is a clear sign that passengers are increasingly using Metro services for more than just getting to work. They are using Metro to go to school, college and university; to shop, visit friends; or go to the cinema, library and theatre. Today sees the launch of our latest advertising campaign themed ‘Metro connects’ which reflects this social change and encourages even more people to think seriously about using public transport instead of the car."

In a bold and unique move, the ads feature neither buses nor people. Instead streaming ribbons in Metro’s trademark magenta colour offer a visual metaphor for a bus service that connects commuters, shoppers, tourists, businesses, families and revellers with every part of Belfast.

The advertising campaign will be rolling out across bus shelters, Adshels, phone kiosks and broadcast and print media. And the centrepiece for the campaign will be a television advert entitled ‘Ribbons’.

“While increases in passenger numbers are encouraging, we firmly believe more growth is possible, and in fact with research conducted by traffic information service Keepmoving.co.uk revealing Belfast to be in the top 10 most congested European cities, further growth will benefit everyone, as well as the environment,“ he said.
