New Rail Discount Card to Ensure Young People Save on Travel
7 November 2006
With loans, overdrafts and debt never far from young people’s thoughts these days, NI Railways has advised that carrying the new 16-21 Rail Discount Card will ensure they benefit from discounted fares.
Available from this week for all 16-21 year olds, the card allows young people to make their money go further by ensuring they get a whopping 20% off weekly and monthly season tickets. From 2 January 2007 it will be compulsory to present a 16-21 Rail Discount Card in order to buy discounted tickets.
Mal McGreevy, Translink’s General Manager for Rail Services explained: “We recognise that young people make up a great proportion of our passengers and that they often face spiralling costs, whether it’s beginning third level education or getting started on a new career. Our intention was to offer them savings that really make a difference.”
The Translink Rail Discount Card is valid for 12 months and costs £7, however cards issued from now until the end of 2006 will be valid until 31 December 2007. The card will expire at the end of the month during which the cardholder turns 22.
Application forms for the Translink Rail Discount Card can be downloaded from www.translink.co.uk/16to21 or can be collected at any rail station. Forms can be handed into any main rail station or posted together with a cheque, postal order or credit / debit card details to Translink Pass Office (16-21 Rail Discount Card), 3 Milewater Road, Belfast, BT3 9BG. Applicants will need a passport sized photo with their name and date of birth printed on the back AND a birth certificate, medical card, passport, drivers’ licence, previous Translink pupil pass or student card.
Discounts apply to normal adult fares but not on special, promotional or short-term fares.
