25 October 2005:
Translink’s rail engineering division is set to run a series of events at it’s engineering depots and workshops, examining ‘Noise at work’ - the theme of European Health and Safety Week which runs from Monday next week (24 October).
“Translink’s first priority is safety for our employees and for our passengers,” explained fleet engineer, Ian Campbell. “During the course of European Health and Safety Week, we will be paying particular attention to noise levels in each of our engineering facilities.
“In addition to surveying noise levels to ensure our risk assessments and controls are adequate and effective; we’ll also be carrying out a Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) health check. We are also planning a series of toolbox briefings, which will include the identification of ear protection and the tasks that require ear defenders or earplugs. We will also be running daily safety presentations to all NI Railways engineering staff,” He said.
Speaking during a tour of Translink’s Fortwilliam engineering facility, Professor Peter McKie CBE HSENI Chairperson commented;
“I am delighted to come and see what Translink are doing to support the European Week 2005 with its theme of 'Stop that Noise!' The risks of noise go far beyond simply causing deafness. Noise can be a contributory factor in causing stress and accidents.
“Noise not only harms health but also undermines productivity and reduces profit. Hearing loss may not only prevent someone from working to their full potential; it can also destroy their social life and isolate them from the community around them.
“European Week 2005 also provides a good opportunity to remind employers of the new Control of Noise at Work Regulations which come into force in April 2006. The new regulations will set a new lower limit of 85 decibels for workers' daily exposure to noise,” Professor McKie concluded.
Translink bus engineering division have already carried out an extensive series of noise level tests on all powered hand tools and garage equipment in anticipation of this legislation and are currently implementing upgrades where required.
