Belfast gears up for monster-mashing Hallowe’en spooktacular

October 17 2005:

It’s fast approaching the time of year when witches, ghosts and their familiars come out to play - and the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Wallace Browne, this morning (Monday October 17) promised that Hallowe’en in Belfast will be the most fangtastic and spooktacular yet.

“You better believe it,” said the Lord Mayor, when he joined a bus load of monsters, vampires, ghouls and other crazy creatures for their annual excursion, from the City Hall to the Odyssey, to announce details of this year’s ‘Metro Monster Mash’.

The area around the city’s landmark Odyssey Arena once more will provide the setting for what is set to be the most hair-raising Hallowe’en spooktacular ever staged in Belfast.  The Celebrate Belfast ‘Metro Monster Mash’ will offer a freakishly fangtastic feast for the senses, with a crazy carnival, magical music, and a truly phantasmagoric fireworks and light show.

The main entertainment programme begins in the Odyssey car park, at 7pm, with live music from the UIster Youth Orchestra and Choir, carnival-themed entertainment and all sorts of surprises to keep revellers on their toes and looking over their shoulders throughout the evening, which culminates with the annual fireworks display, at around 8pm.  We don’t want to give too much away about the frightening finale, but prepare to see one of Belfast’s most famous landmarks in a new light!

For those who dare to venture into the Odyssey Pavilion, you better make sure you’re stocked up with garlic, as you never know what sort of monsters you might find lurking in the shadows.

To ensure that all the little elves and pixies as well as witches, warlocks and their familiars can make their way to and from the spooktacle, Translink Metro once again will be operating their free shuttle service, from 6pm onwards, on a circular route between Chichester Street and Queen’s Quay (dropping off and picking up in Station Street) throughout the evening.

In the week leading up to All Hallow’s Eve, there also will be a special Hallowe’en-themed half-term entertainment programme at Belfast Zoo, starting on Saturday September 22.
