Punctuality on the Up…

7th April 2005

Translink has released their latest set of independent performance results for the autumn 2004 monitor which show that progress continues to be made on improving services, in particular the key area of punctuality; achieving an observed score for punctuality of arrivals of 93% for Ulsterbus, 90% for Citybus and 94% for NI Railways.

Ciaran Rogan Translink’s Marketing Executive explained; “Our passengers have identified punctuality as a key area of service provision and it is good to note that this set of results shows an improvement in punctuality for bus and most notably for NI Railways which we intend to build upon.

“The autumn 2004 monitor was conducted before the introduction of Metro which was put in place in February to further improve punctuality and reliability and we are confident that the initiative will improve timekeeping bringing better bus services to more people in Belfast.

“This positive performance is reflected in the growth in passenger numbers released last week by the Department for Regional Development.

“Increasing congestion affects the journey times of all road users and we remain committed to working with external agencies in a partnership approach to introduce additional bus priority measures.  Other recent initiatives include more frequent Goldline services now providing 139 daily departures across NI.

Mr Rogan explained that the Monitor had highlighted the importance of on-board comfort and value for money and said; “While Ulsterbus on-board comfort ratings continue to improve, more efforts are required to meet Metro and NI Railway’s passenger satisfaction however we are confident that the C3K trains and 300 new buses currently being introduced this year will enhance our comfort ratings significantly.

“Value for money is an important aspect to attract passengers out of their cars and is something which we continuously review, which is why every effort was made to minimise the recent fare increases and keep them below the rate of inflation. Big savings of up to 25% on single fares are available with Smartlink products which we recommend to our passengers and the £3-£2-£1 Metro day fare promotion also continues.  We are hoping to roll out Smartlink to NI Railways later this year.  All revenues are reinvested into improving services.

“While we are starting to see the benefits of the recent increased investment in public transport in Northern Ireland, it is important that we independently monitor our services and find out what our passengers want, to build on our achievements and focus attention on weaker areas in order to continue improving.”
